Description

The sun was drifting to a set, easing the shaded curtain of night in tow. Everything was growing quieter, more still. And yet as the warm light faded over the verdant hillsides, the heat lingered, hindered very shortly by the occasional wafting breeze. The workers were turning in after a hard day of tending the fields. The vineyard itself bustled with activity year round; most certainly, it too was a living creature.

There was a different warmth that evening. The moist coastal air of Saelyn was perfect, it made neither the cold to biting, nor the heat too unbearable. And yet, a much different aura was hanging in the air, quiet, unwanting, but also prominent and invigorating.

The Chae bird looked over his vineyard with a deep sense of pride and satisfaction, knowing that his helping hands put in a full days worth of work. The lovely scent of his favorite berry crop had faded since the peak of summer had passed, but each season brought its own distinct personality to the fields. He had owned and run the vineyard for several years now, and seen many a crop come and go to become some of the finest wine ever dance with a birds tastes, but this crop was going to be best yet.

Despite having what any bird could ever want – a vineyard, a family, a reputation among the highest of guardian orders, his eyes drifted upward, as they did every night, and searched.

“You’re thinking of Kale, aren’t you?” a soft voice wisped out to the deep blue bird from inside the living area. Marelo looked back at his lovely mate, Skye, appropriately named for the hue of her vibrant feathers.

“Not a night goes by that wish I could have said something different,” Marelo mused with a somber voice. “I’ve swallowed by fair share of bitter berries. It always makes me think of those terrible things I said to him…”

“You’re only feeling what’s natural to feel,” she eased towards him, slipping her silky feathers under his wing. “You’re a loving father who only wants the best for his hatchlings,” she crept up to his side, pressing herself flank to flank with her mate. “Even after they’ve long since left the nest.”

Marelo could never quite decide on what he would want to say to son once he saw him again. He only tried to keep his faith in the skies that they might deliver him safely home. Every time he thought of Kale, he fought back every urge to cry even a single tear that it might dishonor everything they both stood for.

Skye pulled him deeper into their humble home, they’re ivory breast feathers mingling with the slightest touch. “You know you can always send him your thoughts. Our skies are nothing short of an open passage for the willing spirit,” her comforts were even more motherly than before.

“I haven’t the slightest idea of what to send him,” Marelo chuckled at his tender wife’s advice.

“You can tell him the news,” she cooed softly as she brought body forward into her mate’s belly. Marelo felt the familiar tender fullness of his wife exuding new warmth. He looked her over to see that she was healthily plump with pregnancy. The new bulge below her bosom had a serene shape; she hadn’t looked this heavenly since she carried their son. Marelo couldn’t help but caress her newfound fullness, comforting two with a single touch.

“This is… absolutely beautiful… wonderful… I can’t believe we have another - ,” Marelo stammered, overwhelmed with a warm excitement that sent his heart a flutter.

“Another child. Another chance. Another life to love,” Skye finished his sentiment, as she seemed to do so often for Marelo.

He pulled her back into his wings, fixing his gaze on her azure eyes, down her lovely beak. Sifting through her breast feathers, his sight returned to their child to be. “I can only imagine what he or she will look like. I can’t wait to find out.”

“She,” Skye replied with a mysterious confidence.

“She?” Marelo was puzzled at this. He then wondered if he was dreaming this serene moment.

“Yes. I am certain of it,” she claimed without a misstep. Her unshakable faith and conviction dispelled all doubts, leaving not a trace of uncertainty in her tender voice.

“Well then, my love,” Marelo whispered with the same confidence. “She will be the most beautiful flower this field has ever seen.”
