Snow Jays

Every warm breath clung to the dark blue air as they strolled, feathers entwined, through the winter evening. Despite the frigid snow, Orin kept gently tugging Mati’s wing, telling her subtly to slow down. There was no hurry. She had said yes and there was no way he was going to let this night slip by without savoring every second he had on their first date.

He had weathered the pride and jealousy, the joy and frustration, the righteous determination and terrifying nerves, but he finally asked her. They had played as fledglings. They had studied together in their school flock. They were friends from as far back as he could remember, but romance was entirely new to them both. Still, this was the kind of thing fully fledged adults did, right? They only had one more spring with their flock and after that…they’d be flying on their own. Maybe….just maybe Mati would stay with him.
